Smartphones and tablets are the most popular Christmas gift in 2012. The ICT industry association Bitkom found out: Every 5th German wants a smartphone, 18 percent have a tablet PC on the wish list. The industry association for consumer electronics gfu expects 19 million new smartphones and 3.5 million tablets sold. According to idealo.de their favorites for the smartphones include the Samsung Galaxy family with S3 and S2. The new Google Nexus 4 lands at # 9, followed by the iPhone 5.
In the U.S., iPhone and Android phones provide 48% to 46% market share in a neck-to-neck race. In Europe, the situation is clear: Kantar Worldpanel recorded in the 5 biggest markets of the EU with 64% an Android-share. With nearly 75% market share, Google Germany is even as good as alone in the grip.
The network equipment maker Ericsson predicts that over the next 5 years, the number of smartphones worldwide will triple to 3.3 billion. But smartphones are only the part of it. There are around. 700,000 apps in the stores of Apple and Google, and - according to IDG Research - an average of 40 different apps on every consumers phone, the choice is not always easy.
In the 5 largest smartphone Markets in Europe Android’s share of total installed apps is the whopping 70%. In return, the iOS share declined since January of this year by 23%, to the 30%. So the balance of power of Android to iOS in Europe has changed enormously within the year.
Spoilt for choice
Toluna online panel says that almost every second German believes that he can no longer do without apps.
